Anaesthesia and pain management
Algo...what?
How can we help you?
The algological or pain management visit includes aspects of the clinical, orthopedical, neurological and muscolo-skeletal assessments.
Vet Crew anesthesiologists have decades of experience in the treatment of acute and chronic pain in pets and will be able to guide you in formulating a plan that includes pharmacological and non-pharmacological aspects and also optimisation of the spaces dedicated to the animal.
All this (and more) is veterinary teleconsulting!
Highlights: Gabapentin
An American study evaluates the use of gabapentin in clinical practice. When and why is it used by our colleagues in North America?
A recent survey published in Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia highlighted the frequency of prescribing gabapentin in pets by North American veterinarians (Reader et al., 2021). The results showed that 69% of participants prescribe gabapentin daily or weekly.
Veterinary surgeons who responded to the survey prescribe gabapentin especially when they cannot administer nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (although its effectiveness has been proven for the treatment of neuropathic pain).
Half of the veterinarians were unaware of how gabapentin worked and the risk of abuse in humans was perceived as low.
Although the questionnaire included only North American vets, what is certain is that this drug has become increasingly popular worldwide, with uses that go beyond the treatment of chronic pain (just think of pre-visit sedations too).
